Hi Athletes, Race Team and Friends.
It is with heavy hearts we have made the difficult decision to cancel the upcoming St. Michaels Running Festival scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2020. Given the great uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the guidance and information provided by our local authorities, and, a standing executive order issued by the Governor of Maryland, the decision was made to protect participants, staff members, volunteers, and our overall community. The decision was not made lightly, and we recognize the disappointment it may cause. Please know this is something we considered very seriously and cancelling the race is the last decision we wanted to make.
The governor’s executive order initially issued the beginning of this month has been further expanded and modified. The additional precautionary measures taken were to extend the closing of all public schools until April 27th, the closing of all non-essential Maryland businesses and a tighter restriction on holding any public event of more than 10 people. Governor Hogan has repeatedly indicated we are on the front end of the COVID-19 battle and no definitive date can be given as to when the temporary restrictions will be lifted – whereby we can begin to resume our normal lives. Additionally, the federal guidelines we’re updated yesterday to strengthen precautionary and social distancing measures until April 30th further indicating we are dealing with an extended timeline.
In addition to safety, it is also now clear the logistics of holding this year’s event are simply not feasible considering the current circumstances and our extended state of emergency. Therefore, we can no longer keep our race team, volunteers, and most importantly our participants, in a holding pattern in light of the fact that little will change over the weeks to come – unfortunately cancelling the event was the choice that needed to be made.
PARTICIPANTS: If you are registered for this year’s event, please see your email for options and further information about the cancellation.
SMRF thanks everyone and we wish you much health and safety as we navigate our way through these very trying times.

The St. Michaels Running Festival, now in its 9th year, is one of the premier destination races in the Mid-Atlantic. Based in one of the oldest waterfront towns on the Chesapeake, runners will be treated to gorgeous water views, a quick mile past charming main street shops for the half-marathon, family friendly 5k, and a rockin’ after-party in downtown St. Michaels. In addition to offering the flattest, fastest USATF half marathon in the region, runners get a generous package including race shirt, finisher medal or pin, complimentary refreshment, handmade finish line treats, and so much more. This year also includes a 1k Kids Fun Run for children ages 12 and younger. All children will receive a very cool finisher’s medal, race bib and finish line food/drink! Registration fees are $20. This is a great way for kids to be a part of the event and start learning about their own physical fitness. The run benefits the St. Michaels Community Center, St. Michaels YMCA, Talbot Goes Purple, Talbot Humane Society and many more! Set up a fundraising campaign for any charity of your choice!
